Summary:

“The Equalizer 2” shoots its way into theaters and it reteams Denzel Washington with director Antoine Fuqua. Sequels are a rarity for Denzel as this is his first one. This time around, Robert McCall must hunt the people that murdered his friend and along the way he helps an adolescent youth. “The Equalizer 2” has many story and character beats that are reminiscent to the previous installment and this bodes for good and bad. Denzel Washington once again brings his A-game to deliver another excellent performance. Melissa Leo returns as McCall’s old friend and she did a great job in the amount of screen time she was given. The antagonist of this film was generic as he never really came off as a serious threat. This film further explores McCall’s past as we are given more info about his wife and military background. Ashton Sanders plays a young man named Miles who McCall takes a liking to. His is character is written similarly to that of Chloe Grace-Moretz’s character from the first film. These two had tremendous chemistry with each other. McCall goes full ‘Sherlock Holmes’ in this film as Fuqua shows the way he plans out his attack ahead and how precise he is about it. While this trait made for fun action, it began to overstay its welcome. This all becomes irrelevant as we are treated to a third act shootout in a town surrounded by a storm. “The Equalizer 2” may not live up to the first film but it nevertheless boasts another great Denzel performance.
